La bandera sureña junto al puño negro

Image

The Pervert's Guide to Ideology

Image
Cultural theorist superstar Slavoj Zizek re-teams with director Sophie Fiennes (The Pervert's Guide to Cinema) for another wildly entertaining romp through the crossroads of cinema and philosophy. With infectious zeal and a voracious appetite for popular culture, Zizek literally goes inside some truly epochal movies to explore and expose how they reinforce prevailing ideologies. As the ideology that undergirds our cinematic fantasies is revealed, striking associations emerge: What hidden Catholic teachings lurk at the heart of The Sound of Music? What are the fascist political dimensions of Jaws? Taxi Driver, Zabriskie Point, The Searchers, The Dark Knight, John Carpenter's They Live (one of the forgotten masterpieces of the Hollywood Left), Titanic, Kinder Eggs, verité news footage, Beethoven's Ode to Joy and propaganda epics from Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia all inform Zizek's stimulating, provocative and often hilarious psychoanalytic-cinematic rant. ...

Illustrator draws faces, lets 4-year-old draw bodies

Image
When artist Mica Angela Hendricks got a new sketch book a while back, her 4-year-old daughter was insistent upon being able to try it out herself. Hendricks tried to say no, but her daughter used a phrase on her mom that she must have heard a few times herself… If you can’t share, we might have to take it away… Well, that did the trick and Hendricks her little girl finish one of the characters she’d started in the new sketchbook. This turned out to be an accidental stroke of genius. Hendricks now regularly draws faces for her daughter to finish. After the younger artist completes her confident pen strokes, the older then fills them in with color and and their collaborative work is done. Read more about this project or buy some of the mother-daughter duo’s prints .

Thorium: An Energy Solution

Image
Thorium is readily available and can be turned into energy without generating transuranic wastes. Thorium’s capacity as nuclear fuel was discovered during WW II, but ignored because it was unsuitable for making bombs. A liquid-fluoride thorium reactor (LFTR) is the optimal approach for harvesting energy from Thorium, and has the potential to solve today’s energy/climate crisis. LFTR is a type of Thorium Molten Salt Reactor (Th-MSR). This video summarizes over 6 hours worth of thorium talks given by Kirk Sorensen and other thorium technologists. Thorium is a naturally-occurring mineral that holds large amounts of releasable nuclear energy, similar to uranium. This nuclear energy can be released in a special nuclear reactor designed to use thorium. Thorium is special because it is easier to extract this energy completely than uranium due to some of the chemical and nuclear properties of thorium.
